SOUTH AFRICA'S FIRST SMART TOWNSHIP/INFORMAL SETTLEMENT

With the global focus on Smart Cities, why are there no discussion around enabling Smart Townships/Informal Settlements? With the bulk of our fast growing population living in these areas, the focus on Smart Cities and not Townships only serves to amplify the inequalities of not just digital, but education, health and services. While at the Digital Foundation, Emma set out to build the foundations of a Smart Township, with a mission to facilitate on-the-ground projects that enable township citizens - born of access to reliable and affordable data, digital skills, hyper-local relevant content and everyday use of the internet.
